ABSTRACT
Kitchen waste is an important part of municipal
solid wastes in large cities. These kitchen wastes are mainly biodegradable
products and can be a good source for anaerobic fermentation. Millions of tons
of kitchen waste being produced every year which have to be safely disposed
without any negative impact on the environment. Anaerobic digestion as a
pre-treatment prior to landfill disposal or composting offers several advantages, such as
minimization of masses and volume, inactivation of biological and biochemical
processes in order to avoid landfill gas
and odour emissions, reduction of landfill
settlements and energy production in the form of methane. Therefore,
anaerobic digestion of bio-degradable kitchen waste can be considered an
alternative option to improve the environment condition caused by organic solid
wastes/ kitchen wastes and at the same time taking an advantage as an
environmentally friendly resource of energy.
In this thesis work, a 0.34m3 portable biogas
digester was designed and also fabricated based on feeding rate of the kitchen
waste such as potatoes waste and onions waste. According to the design, 45.85L
biogas can be obtained theoretically but in practice 35.69L was obtained. The
digester was fabricated portable because in urban area, people have not enough
space for making underground biogas digester. In urban area, people have enough
space on the roof, so they can easily keep the portable biogas digester on the
roof and also use their kitchen waste to get biogas as a cooking fuel and
fertilizers etc.
